Patron Saints for Election Day 2020

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." -Philippians 4:6

Many people, myself included, are feeling some level of anxiety and even hopelessness over what the results may be of today's election. However, we are told in Scripture not to be anxious about anything, but to leave it in God's hands. Regardless of the outcome tonight, we must remember that our ultimate hope is in the Lord, and not in the United States of America.

As we present our requests to God, we can ask the intercession of the saints. Here are five saints who are appropriate for today's intention of a positive and peaceful outcome to the election:

1. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception: Mary, under this title, is the official patroness of the USA. As our patroness, she has a special dedication to the concerns of our country.

2. St Thomas More: patron saint of politicians. A statesman himself, he dedicated his life to service of God and justice, rather than seeking power. Most famously, he opposed the unlawful divorce and remarriage of King Henry VIII. He was martyred for his commitment to truth. Let us pray that he inspires our own politicians to such honest public lives.

3. St Michael the Archangel: Guardian of the Church. As our church continues to fall under greater persecution, let us pray to this powerful intercessor and defender of the Faith for his protection and guidance.

4. St Jude Thaddeus: patron saint of hopeless cases. I don't truly believe that the outcome of the election is hopeless, but it sometimes feels that way. St Jude Thaddeus is a good saint to pray to about this.

5. St. Isabella of Portugal: patron saint of peace. I think one of the main concerns about this election is the concern over violence and tension regardless of who gains power. As queen of Portugal, she strove to keep the peace between her son and husband who struggled with each other for control over the kingdom.
